The audience is the one who is gay accepting and gay hating because they are the ones voting. I don't think Idol was ever less accepting of gays. The first ever Idol winner (talking about the UK Pop Idol) was gay. Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert were never problem with Idol. Clay was incredibly popular and so was Adam. It's the audience members who are either accepting or not accpeting. I doubt there is any reason for a gay contestants to come out because of Ellen. Plus, the producers have already decided who is going to try out before they audition in front of the Simon, Kara, Randy, and Ellen. If there are more openly gay contestants trying out, that means the producers had already planned this before choosing Ellen as a judge.
